USU Desktop Linux 7 Review

USU 7.0.1 Based on Ubuntu Release 11.04 (Natty)
Kernel 2.6.38-10-Generic
Gnome 2.32.1

It took me awhile to do a full review of this new found treasure since I have to make a sharp turn to try and review Clem's New Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon, it was worth the side trip see the review here but back to USU Linux 7 Desktop. When I wandered out of LM after the release of LM 12, I decided to start looking for other alternatives and found Comice OS 4 and USU Linux 7 Desktop for which I am drafting a review. I might say USU Linux is one of the many unsung hero in the field of Open Source / GNU Linux area and I was caught by its simplicity and functionality based on what its portal claims, so I decided to take a look of these would be popular Linux Distro read on.

Interface
like other Ubuntu Linux USU uses the same interface but with one prominent annoyance after booting and offering its desktop one dialog box appears informing the user of various tips to use USU but the big problem is it does not show/displays anything except for a blank window screen! Other than that the look and feel is somewhat LM Isadora an area that can still be improve just like what LM team have done to LM 13.

Ease of Use
the feeling is similar to LM 13 very much user friendly but the only drawback is offering the desktop on its native language which is Bulgarian, it maybe a small problem if you have already decided to try and install it in your machine for you can simply select your preferred language and it will automatically translate the installation language but if your simply testing the distro out then the problem magnifies! imagine how can an english speaking user interact with the default language. How I wish the USU Team offers alternative language upon boot-up that would ensure catering to both tester and would be new user.

Application
            Graphics        -           Great.
I love the added application such as DIA, Scribus and Inkscape.
            Sound & Video -      Great.
Kino, Miro, ISO File Editor and AviDemux what else can I ask for!
            Games           -           Good.
I always works long hours driving onto my keyboard and its always a blast to burn a few minutes playing.
            Internet          -           Great.
I'm an avid transmission user so I was a bit skeptical about the  torrent app their offering (flush) but to my surprise it does what it do best downloading torrents just like my fav app. I was always praying that Clem include skype on its every release atleast USU made my day!
            Educational  -           Superb!
A treasure trove for educator like myself.
            Office             -           Great.
Gramps, Homebank and OpenProject is definitely a welcome addition.
            Accessories  -           Superb!
Alarm Clock, xCHM, DOS Box Emulator, Virtual Box and atlast Search for Files GUI that do the job pretty well and accurately.
            System Tools -          Good.
Anti Virus Installer (though you wont need it using Linux) and LiveUSB Install.
            Universal Access -   No Remarks.
Since I do not use included application, sorry.
            Wine               -           Great.
After installing any Linux Distro its been my habit to install Wine and Virtual Box this time it came pre-installed thank USU Team.

Hardware Detection
Never been happy LM, Comice and USU do the job well detecting my gadgets from printers to USB Modems.

Memory Footprint
Just above LM 13 (10MB more) but the firepower of this distro justifies the memory consumption.

Conclusion
Though seldom mentioned its existence USU Linux proves it can bring down the stars from its pedestal, if you don't always jump to new version of installed application then its a blast to use!
A must for newbie like me a definite contender of Ubuntu and LM, like Comice OS 4 this flavor of Linux is destined to succeed with a bang to brag!

My Rating:

A Great Distro, my rating is 9.7 / 10!
“Linux Mint 13 is my HOME but USU 7 Desktop is now my family”

Editor’s note: USU Linux 7 Desktop was compared against Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon  and Comice OS 4.

Linux Mint 13 Review

Linux Mint 13
Kernel 3.2.0-23-Generic
Gnome 3.4.1
linuxmint-13-cinnamon-dvd-32bit-rc.iso

I was testing out USU Linux (USU Linux Review) when I heard that Clem released two version of Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon and Mate, since I am a LM fan boy myself, I took some time off with my current review and downloaded linuxmint-13-cinnamon-dvd-32bit-rc and have it installed to fully experience the greatness of a distro I always believe it has to be installed otherwise you'll missed half of the fun it has to offer.

After installing it to my handy 4 gig flash drive I gave it a go, booting always runs sweet be it Helena up to katya after a few beeps and seconds LM displays its wallpaper LM Maya quite an art work before installing I decided to take it for a little spin first before christening it to my drive.

Interface
I love the new look Clem decided to adopt for this release, with my 3 days of intensive usage I find cinnamon very promising might be the successor of gnome, KDE and maybe including LXDE! to think that it’s still on its RC stage at the time of this review. I will put a bet a few months more this will be a tough contender in the GUI industry!
When Clem's team offered LM 12 I was one of the many who turn their heads around for an alternative to LM and found a new love under the wings of Comice OS 4 and USU Linux. At that turning point in my computing experience I dont know if I would return to LM again but this offering by Clem's Team have proven that LM indeed is destined to replace Ubuntu in its position as top Linux Dog!

Ease of Use
do we have to really delves in this area? I mean its LM for crying out loud! With this release LM just solidifies its hold on the “ease of use” category I would not like to waste your time for something you/we already knows the answer!

Application
Accessories – my only take here is the imagewriter it does not seem to function effectively I tried using it a couple of times to no avail.
            Graphics – just functional
Internet – good (hope next time they add Skype and chrome)
            Office – great
Sound and Video – good (could not play wmv files though)
System Tools – good as always (though power statistics seems similar to system monitor)
            Preferences – great
            Administration - great
Request – please kindly include geany and other programming languages (C++, Python,  scratch...)

Hardware Detection
No doubt this is an area LM does not astray itself from, always great from Boot-Up to shutdown I would definitely say hands down superb!

Memory Footprint
Surprisingly with additional arsenals here and there it did not wreak havoc to its memory! Memory consumption is at its prime and leanest! Just like Comice OS 4 and USU (review to follow) definitely a must for other Distro out there.

My Rating:

All in all, my rating is 9.5 / 10!
“I wandered before but now I'm back to my HOME thanks Clem and Team”

Editor’s note: Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon was compared against Comice OS 4 and USU Linux.

Pear Linux - Comice OS 4 Review

Comice OS 4
Build 01a07
Kernel 3.0.0-16Generic
Gnome 3.2.1

I am using Libre Office 3.4.4 Build 402 running under Comice OS 4 Build 01a07 to translate into words my experience in using this relatively new flavor of Linux a fork from Ubuntu Oneiric with a touch of Mac OS.

I discovered Comice OS from various Linux/Open Source site and reviews and since I'm also currently looking for a new Linux Flavor to review I decided to try and taste the aroma of Comice OS. So I fired-up my net and able to download Comice OS 4 (COS4) burned it to a DVD and let it boot up, to my surprise I can say in my personal experience that this piece of meat is the fastest so far I’ve tested with my 2 year old machine! Just under around 8 seconds! Mind you even Puppy Linux (one of my favorite lightweight Linux) takes around 30 seconders to load. To me it gives an impression that hey even if were under the big bad ass Linux boys category we can still be faster like Manny “Pacman – Praise God” Pacquiao!

After booting I was offered with some options to my dismay Live Session does not allow me to install COS4 (if ever a person testing it wanted already to do a full install) to my drive, maybe some dictionary techie guys from Comice though that Live Session must be for and only for Live Session or maybe he/she does not want us to think that they are mimicking other Distro out there that incorporates Live Session and Install Mode in one! Oh well lots of Maybes!

If you’re like me, who after testing a Linux Distro (and like what I saw) then this first annoyance is simply annoying. But using the Live Session gives you almost all the features that COS4 is offering except that in installed version its more faster than Live Session.

After selecting the option to install COS4, you will be transported in a very plain and simple screen with the installation mode already running in the background the same rhetorical screen and question will pop-out for you to continue the installation, language, drive partition and after the user inputs of credentials (username, password, etc.)  The installation screens just shrink to a portion that only informs the user of the installation progress! I just felt that Comice should have used the installation duration to at least show/tell the new user what Comice is and may offer them, if there’s a new piece of software that was added and other stuff pertaining to Comice OS! I think that is more fun than mere staring at what status the installation is currently in! For me that dull moment is the most annoying of all Comice has offered me (both pre and post installation).

After an eternity waiting for the installation to finish (it took between 10-15 minutes on my machine) because of the drab moment! Comice finally ejected my DVD and asks me to restart my machine to finalize the installation. After logging-in, COS4 showcased a heavy customized gnome and with a very responsive dock icons below the screen, I tried some Puppy flavor before using Docky settings none of them seems to be as responsive and fast as COS4 is, for these alone COS4 beat them badly.

I explored endlessly and found some software that I love using are missing from COS4, VLC, Chrome, Grub Editor, unetbootin, geany editor and torrent application, the said application are the love of my life. So what I did was search my hard drive for some installation files (.deb) lurking around my folders and started installing them one by one but after installing Opera my docky suddenly disappears! I could not resurrect it, after a few failed attempts I decided to do a reboot thinking this might fix the problem. Indeed it did but a new problem resurfaced I could not readily double-click my deb files to install it; doing so would invoke the archive manager of COS4! Linux is like a human beings life nothing is always perfect. The only turn-around I could think of is to manually right-click the deb files and select gdebi installer to open (install) it. I could still not fix that problem up to this writing.

I'm really happy with how COS4 detects my hardware be it Plug and Play or not, it easily detects my Bluetooth devices, my Mobile broadband and some other peripherals though I did not have the chance to test its printer detection yet but for what Comice have given me with the array of tools present albeit lacking my preferred application I do believe this piece of Bad Ass Linux can make other Linux Team out there, to think twice before offering that bloated gnome flavor Linux.

With a small footprint as compared to the older big Linux, Comice will surely click its way in to the Linux contender match! A death match maybe? I hope not, after all we are Linux Advocates lets wield Linux / Open Source to the forefront of computing!

My Rating:

All in all, my rating is 9/10!  To the Development Team of Comice don't forget to say Hello to Microsoft. :)

Editor’s note: Comice OS 4 was compared against LMDE 2011 edition, Open Suse Gnome and Linux Mint Gnome.

An Epistle for you...

Maybe you've been wondering why I wrote an epistle for you, well just wanted you to know through this letter how much I love you and how much I care for  you. You know what? It sucks for me to try to stay away from you and to forget all the moments and memories we have shared  especially the feelings that I only reserved for you.

Dramatic isn't it? But it's true... I know from the very start that it is very wrong to love you, but you know what keeps me pursuing what I feel? Simply because that’s what I have felt for you. I know there will come a time that you wont need me anymore. It hurts to think about it but I guess that's the reality because “you’re not mine”. Maybe I seldom say it to you but I love you and I mean it.

I am more than willing to give up everything for you because of this damn feelings of mine! I cried too much and sacrificed a lot, I tried to set you free and even gave you up but I can't I simply can't. I feel sorry for my self because I can no longer find a way to live without you.

I'll be here! Take care of your self always and always remember that I’m always here whenever you need me! Love you a lot, till death I will always will, because you've been part of me.

…..
I wish you all the happiness and satisfaction in life! Go on with the things which you think will make you happy, good luck and take care always.

Mandriva Linux One 2010.2 Gnome - Review

Boot-up takes a while to load but once loaded the magic begins, from a Mandrake Fan yes I am one of the many user who tested and fell in love with Mandrake. It was during my short stint in a local secondary school where I accidentally bumped into Mandrake and since I love tinkering with new application especially with open source but don’t get me wrong I’m no Linux nor Open Source expert I just happen to be one of the million Linux Newbie and would eventually part of the former user of Microsoft Products, sorry bill but you should try Linux in one of your seminars one time you would be amazed how much fun and exciting driving a Linux Distro!

Oops sorry, I know it was supposed to be a Mandriva Linux One 2010.2 gnome review I just lost a bit there anyway back to the review, again after a long but tolerable boot-up it was almost a perfect desktop OS (we’re still waiting for such OS) let us start my amazing rediscovery of Mandrake now Mandriva!

Gone Too Soon - AJ Perez

While I’m procrastinating about my impending early retirement my sister who was surfing the net at that time told me what happen to AJ Perez and when I heard the shocking news about the early demise of a very young actor, it send me resting with my back on my favorite chair, a sudden surge of electrifying truth poured unto my immobile body!

Gone Too Soon – Files, Programs, and Personal Stuff

A long long time ago (sounds like a song lyrics) I saw someone buying an external drive (WD Passport) in a mall well my first impression is, why invest in such device like that when you can buy another internal storage device that can be connected inside my machine no problem isn't it?

Well that same argument broke me and commanded me to kneel and howl a very resentful sigh! OMG! My storage drive did a last rumba for me and just like that it was gone… gone? WTF, all of my files, programs and personal stuff inside my drive was gone?

Gone Too Soon – Rt. Rev. Joaquin A. Siongco, Jr.

Days passed-by; still I can’t type a word to start my story. It was during my senior years that I would meet the person I call now – Tatay (father) Jas; he was good old looking, always in jeans, sporty and quite snappy well that’s how Tatay Jas is to me.

Our first meeting did not send any special connection right away; it will take months after, he being one of my professors asks me to do something related to my subjects and for the school as well and so I did but with a heavy heart, I felt it’s not really part of my academic task to do such thing. Well in short I did the job shabbily and was easily spotted by Tatay Jas! I was so embarrassed that when he confronted me about it I tried circumventing his instruction to favor my work! But this man who happens to possess a crazy memory genes turn around to stare right thru my eyes and stated the same instruction complete with punctuations as they were being given to me few weeks back! I was so taken-aback, I really thought I could escape from this situation but I did not and cannot! That’s how he earned my respect, he always tells us not to ask or beg for respect but to always work your way to earned it with a firm footing!

After I graduated I took a teaching job in a private secondary school, where I thought computer subjects for the junior and senior students of the said institution. It took us another three (3) more years before our path crosses again, these time he ask me if I could convince myself rechanneling my teaching prowess from secondary to a tertiary position. At first I was a bit reluctant; I could not imagine teaching in a tertiary environment. Maybe I just could not convince myself the idea of teaching college student, nonetheless I was swayed to accept the position and since I am a Snake Capricorn I told myself why not!

Memo of a Child

  1. Don't spoil me. I know quite well that I ought not to have all I ask for. I'm only testing you.
  2. Don't be afraid to be firm with me. I prefer it. It makes me feel more secure.
  3. Don't let me form bad habits. I have to rely on you to detect them in the early stages.
  4. Don't make me feel smaller than I am. It only makes me behave stupidly big.
  5. Don't correct me in front of others if you can help it. I'll take much more notice if you talk quietly with me in private.
  6. Don't make me feel that my mistakes are sins. It upsets my sense of value.
  7. Don't protect me from consequences. I need to learn the painful way sometimes.
  8. Don't be too upset when I hate you! It isn't you that I hate, but the power to thwart me
  9. Don't make to much notice of my small ailments. Sometimes they get me the attention I need.
  10. Don't nag me. If you do, I shall protect my self by appearing deaf.
  11. Don't make me rash promises. Remember I feel badly let down when promises are broken.
  12. Don't forget that I can not explain my self as well as I should like to. That's why I am not always accurate.
  13. Don't tax my amnesty too much. I am easily frightened into telling lies.
  14. Don't be inconsistent. That completely confuses me and make me lose faith in you.
  15. Don't put me off when I ask questions. If you do, you will find that I will stop asking and seek my information elsewhere.
  16. Don't tell me my fears are silly. They are terribly real and you can do much to reassure me if you try to understand.
  17. Don't ever suggest that you are perfect or infallible. It gives me too great a shock when I discover that your are neither.
  18. Don't ever think that it is beneath your dignity to apologize to me. An honest apology makes me feel surprisingly warm toward you.
  19. Don't forget how quickly I am growing up. It must be very difficult for you to keep pace with me, but try please.
  20. Don't forget that I love experimenting... I couldn't get on without it, so please put up with it.
  21. Don't forget that I can thrive not without lots of love, understanding, from you! But this I don't have to mention, do i!
